Chassis Construction

A piece of hardboard is cut to size and lines drawn to show
underframe pieces. Atlas O scale refrigerator car underframe
details are used to provide details. Balsa wood and pine
hole plugs create more detail.

The bolsters are made and glued on.
|
|
More details added and the underframe is painted.
|

|
Ends made and slid into place.
|
|
|
|
Steps made from styrene and chassis notched to fit them.

Floor Boards
|

|
|
Basswood strips glued to the chassis.
|
|
|
|
After the glue tried, the floor was sanded.
|
|
|
|
A jig was made from a drafting triangle in order to quickly punch
nail locations.
|
|
|
|
The floor was stained.
|
|
|
Ink was rubbed over the floor to highlight the depressions.
|
Body
|
|
|
|
Body rough-in.
|
|
|
|
Body ends built up and fitted into a slot in the chassis.

|
|
Details added to ends.

Interior
|
|
|
|
Items were scratchbuilt except for the seats
which were from car models.
|
Roof
|
|
|
|
The base roof was made from styrene and the raised silver portions
came from two Lionel 027
auto carrier car roofs. Roof is aligned and held to the body
with four pins on each end.
